In today’s world, the aesthetic aspect of the female Breast is a point of admiration, beauty, function & womanhood, disparity, conjencture, comparision and debate. The role of Augmentation Mammoplasty is obviously to increase the size, profile, and projection of the female breast and decisions have to be made by the patient and the surgeon together, in concert, for the ideal expected outcome. According to certain statistical data Augmentation mammoplasty is the second most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States after Liposuction; it is estimated 1% of adult American Women have breast implant.
PRE OPERATIVE WORK UP & EVALUATION – Usually the patient who desires Augmentation Mammaplasty is usually in her 30s & 40s, has had her children, is content with her significant other, and is content with her life but would just like to have an improvement in the size of her breast. But there is as such no defined upper age limit; though most surgeons would not operate on a female patient below 18 years of age. As with any operative procedure, a full history is obtained and physical examination is performed. This history includes family history of breast cancer, previous breast biopsies, nipple discharge, bra cup size, and recent growth or atrophy of the breasts due to pregnancy or breast feeding. In addition, a complete past medical history, including medications and allergies, is listed. Ceasation of smoking is very important prior to surgery. The physical examinations include a comprehensive breast examination to look for various masses, previous scars, and nipple position such as retraction, thoracic deformity and asymmetries. After this a complete and comprehensive discussion ensues with the patient about the operative techniques and complications and realistic expectations.
SURGERY PRINCIPLES & TECHNIQUE – The technique of breast augmentation involves placement of an implant behind the breast or the breast and pectoralis major muscle to push the breast forward and to increase it’s projection and size. There are mainly 2 types of Primary Implants available in the market. They are Saline implants & Silicon Gel implants. Both the saline and silicon gel filled implants have an identical silicone or envelope and are manufactured with either a smooth or a textured surface. The use of Silicon implants are more common, which are available in different shapes and sizes. The choice has to be individualised according to each patient, depending on measurements like -- Base width of the breast, the nipple to inframmary fold distance, the intermammary distance, sternal notch to nipple distance, a pinch test of the tissues in the breast’s upper pole and a skin stretch test. The implants can be placed either in -- subglandular / submuscular / subfascial / Dual plane, depending on the beforesaid measurements. The most common approach is through inframammary crease & through a incision just placed above this line, the implant is introduced, into the pocket selected.
POSTOPERATIVE COURSE & COMPLICATIONS --- A patient who undergoes breast augmentaion usually stays for 1 day after surgery in the hospital, for recovery from anaesthesia and the surgery. After surgery vigorous exercise with use of the upper body is restricted for a period of 4 weeks. However the patient can resume normal activities within 1 week. Haematoma, seroma, infecton, Hypertrophic scarring may occur in some very rare cases. ** Breast Augmentation Surgery - Looking for Breast Augmentation Surgery in Gurgaon?
